World Postal Day
Date: 9 October
October 9th., date on which the Universal Postal Union was founded in 1874, is observed by the Postal Community as the World Post Day.
By the 1874 Treaty of Bern, the existing different world postal services and regulations were unified in a “single postal territory” for the exchange of letter-post items. All signing parties committed to provide free transit for the letter-post items all over that “single postal territory”, as a basic principle. At present, the UPU’s main commitment is to promote and develop communication among the world nations.
The Union is destined to fulfill a first-rate role, furthering the links between postal services. Seven thousand outlets and 6,2 million postal employees serving clients all over the world are two major assets of the Postal Administrations. Theirs is the largest distribution network in the world, covering 189 countries. Every postal product and service is available to clientes at the postal facilities, points of contact of easy access. Moreover, friendly relationships are also often developed between clients and postmen, who daily deliver their correspondence.
